HiME stands for “Highly-advanced Materializing Equipment” which translates to teenage girls with superpowers who stake their lives on creatures they summon during fights. The story of the first season comes in three major arcs, the last of which is one of the most powerful pieces of storytelling of the last several years… with a catch. The first arc is the exposition of all the HiME, their relationships and their superpowers. The second arc involves a young villain and her android taking over the school in order militarily to gain control over the HiME. The third arc pits betrayal upon the HiME where they must fight one another, with the death of those they love at steak until there is only one left who will gain the ultimate power of HiME. The music is standard through the series with a catchy opening Jpop song and a bittersweet ending theme. The animation is well done and fluid, while the story is at first clumsy in pacing, then builds to an amazing crescendo.
